The Leffel Consulting Group, LLC is managed by Elizabeth Leffel, PhD, MPH, who has been a leader in the biodefense and radiation fields for almost 20 years. She is a recognized expert in the development of animal models with inhalational disease from a variety of threat agents. Dr. Leffel has held numerous national and international positions in both private and government work groups, advisory committees, and forums. She has been appointed by the Governor to the Secure Commonwealth Panel for Virginia. She also serves on the National Biodefense Science Board, under appointment from the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Dr. Leffel offers a unique set of qualifications as she has experience at all stages of drug development. She worked as a bench scientist in a Department of Defense laboratory establishing natural history models for aerosolized threat agents, as well as testing and evaluating medical countermeasures (MCMs) against infectious disease. For PharmAthene, Inc. she directed nonclinical programs to advance vaccines and biologics to treat exposure to biological and chemical agents. As a senior executive at Terapio Corporation, she was responsble for both radiation MCMs and other commercial indications such as radiation-induced oral mucositis, traumatic brain injury and stroke.
She has collaborated as a scientist, nationally and internationally, on research teams and successfully procured funding from the Department of Defense, the National Institutes of Health and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority. As an executive, she has directed programs for the development of medical countermeasures at stages of both pre- and post-IND filings. Dr. Leffel holds a BS in Biochemistry and Nutrition from Virginia Tech, a Master's of Public Health from The George Washington University and a PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicolgy from the Medical College of Virginia.
